Dying slowly

Hello Father,

What is the church’s position on an elderly person (91) dying slowly after a serious heart attack when the doctors say that there is no hope for recovery? Is forced tube feeding acceptable to maintain bodily function? Who and how is this decision made? The guilt and despair on the families part is huge. Starving a comatose person seems heartless yet prolonging the inevitable seems heartless as well. We are confused. Your advice is always valued. Thank you in advance.
